Assistant United Nations Secretary-General and Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Coordinator

In March 2016, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of Gerda Verburg of the Netherlands, as Coordinator of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement and Assistant UN Secretary-General, a post she assumed on 1 August 2016.

From 2011 to 2016, Gerda served as the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the UN Organizations for Food and Agriculture in Rome (FAO, WFP and IFAD).

In 2014 she was appointed Chair of the Global Agenda Council for Food and Nutrition Security of the World Economic Forum (WEF) and from 2013 until 2015, she served as Chair of the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS), a multi-stakeholder committee where governments, civil society, private sector, research institutions and others addressed food and nutrition issues.

From 2007-2011, Gerda served as speaker in the Dutch House of Representatives on economics, energy and innovation and as Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. In 2008 she was elected Chair of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development.

As part of her current role, Gerda serves as a member of the SUN Movement Lead Group and an ex officio member of the SUN Movement Executive Committee.
